Typically, you would want your viewer to see your presentation in a final polished form with the appropriate production values. Bookend transitions are simply trimming the beginning and end of your presentation with a “fade up" or "fade down to black” transition. When the viewer launches your video, it fades up from black to your on-camera presence, you’re centered in frame facing forward, and ready for your delivery. When you’re finished, you close and hold that centered position as the presentation fades down to black. Essentially, it implies that a second person is operating the camera to make the recording, freeing you to leave a positive, professional, prepared impression focused on delivering your content.

Editing your My Mediasite presentation is facilitated through the Mediasite Web Editor. The Web Editor has basic editing functions allowing you to trim the beginning, the end, and anything in between of the Mediasite recorded presentation time line. The Web Editor allows you to move, update, and remove unwanted slides from the presentation timeline and, as a nondestructive editor, provides you the option of saving your edits as individual projects before you commit your edited revisions.

Please note that, while anyone can download and use the recorder, only faculty accounts are able to upload recordings to the Mediasite servers.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Navigate to your My Mediasite Management Portal to access your presentation files within your Private folder and select the recorded session you wish to edit - select the Edit video icon directly below the placeholder image of your recorded presentation. The Edit Video icon is highlighted in red below.


  2. The Mediasite Web Editor will load two main areas displaying the session content: slide images, screencast images, video stream, and, underneath, the synchronized audio track within the timeline of your presentation. The video stream is the larger left-most window above the dark grey tool bar. Basic Rewind to Beginning, Play, and Forward to End controls are directly below the video window. The slide image window is the larger, right-most window with a slide indicator below it. This smaller slide indicator feature allows you to see the total number of slide images within the presentation timeline.


  3. Included in the Mediasite Web Editor timeline, is a Play Head Indicator. It's represented by a vertical line, across the video/audio/slide image track with a blunt arrow within the time code track. The Timecode Track displays the hour, minutes, and seconds of your recorded presentation. The Play Head Indicator identifies the playback location when you play the presentation within the timeline.


  4. The Web Editor audio track waveform is nested between the captured video stream above and the captured still images of the presentation slides. The audio track provides a basic waveform representation of the levels of your spoken delivery. Care should be taken to speak clearly and consistently, avoiding extreme peaks or soft drop outs during your delivery.


  5. The video/audio track has bookends on each end, represented by a vertical bar with a small circle at the bottom and a directional triangle in the middle. Start and End labels are located adjacent to the directional triangles and even with the audio wave file. The Bookends allow you to select and drag across content to indicate a new beginning for your presentation. The Bookend at the end of the track is a similar bar that can be dragged and positioned for a new ending point. The white triangle/node graphic. Drag the time line marker to the position you wish to trim. Select the white bar and triangle from the beginning, and drag it to your new starting point.
     


  6. Expanding the view and detail of the timeline may be necessary to pinpoint a specific beginning or end point. The Mediasite Web Editor has a Timeline Collapse or Expand ribbon on the very bottom of the editor window. This ribbon can act much like a rubber band to expand the timeline to view greater detail or collapse the timeline to view entire length. It will be necessary to use the Timeline Collapse/Expand ribbon when you wish to trim the beginning or end of your presentation to produce a "fade up from black" or "fade down to black" transition. You will need to use this ribbon to locate or isolate areas in the timeline to edit the video stream, audio track waveform, or when selecting the captured jpeg images of the slide presentation.
    1. You should notice as the Timeline Ribbon expands or collapses, the time track responds appropriately. You'll see more detail of the "hours", minutes", and "seconds" displayed directly above the captured video streaming track.
     


  7. Select the small gray node at the bottom of the track to create a transition. Typically, a second or two is adequate to provide a “fade up from black” transition. Repeat this process to trim the end of your presentation to create a "fade down to black" transition as desired. Trimming the beginning and end of your presentation will provide a more professional appearance visually. It will remove excess time, reduce the package file size, and evoke a greater sense of production value. Using the Play Head Indicator will help you locate and select the appropriate areas to edit or trim.
