There are several different ways to grade in Blackboard. The steps below detail three different ways to grade an assignment.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Access the Grade Center.

  2. Find the appropriate column for the assignment. You should see a yellow exclamation mark icon  in the students’ corresponding cells that signals something Needs Grading.
  3. There are three ways to then grade an assignment:
    1. Click the down-arrow to open the contextual menu for the column in question and choose Grade Attempts. This allows you to go through each attempt in succession.

    2. Hover over the cell with the Needs Grading Icon to show the down-arrow. Click this to open the contextual menu. Then choose the attempt you wish to grade (this will also have the Needs Grading Icon unless you have already graded it). This allows you to focus on students’ individual attempts.

    3. Hover over the cell with the Needs Grading icon to show the drop-down arrow. Click this to open the contextual menu, and then click View Grade Details.

      1. Click View Attempts or Grade Attempt to determine the grade.

  4. On the grading screen, in the ATTEMPT box, type the grade you wish to give the student.

  5. If you wish, you can give feedback or notes, or attach a document to the assignment for the student to review. You can also use Inline Grading to comment directly on a document submitted by a student.
  6. When you are finished, click Submit. You will see a purple success bar at the top of the screen.

You can return to the Grade Center to see the assignment column updated.
