Microsoft OneNote is a note-taking management tool for gathering and sharing digital information. This application works great for capturing thinking using text notes, images, audio snippets, annotations, drawings and more. Microsoft OneNote can be accessed anytime, and on any device, making note-taking and collaborating with your team seamless. 

Step-by-step guide

How to Access Microsoft OneNote

  1. First, login to the Office 365 Portal  
  2. Find the OneNote icon, either on the main screen or in the waffle menu at the top left of the page.  
  3. Click OneNote to open the application. 
     

Create a New Notebook

Microsoft OneNote notebooks are stored in OneDrive. By default, when a new notebook is created in Microsoft OneNote it will contain a new section and one new blank page. You can create as many notebooks as you like. Follow the steps below to create a new Microsoft OneNote notebook:

  1. From the Office 365 Portal, click the OneNote icon 
  2. Click New > Blank Notebook


  3. Name the notebook and click Create. 

Create New Section

Whenever you create a new notebook in Microsoft OneNote, a new section is automatically created for you. Additional sections can be created from the Insert ribbon, by right clicking on an existing section or by following the steps described below:

  1. Click add section in the bottom left corner.  

      
  2. Enter a section name and click ok.  


  3. Right click on the section tab to rename or change the section color. 

Create New Page

Whenever you create a new section in Microsoft OneNote, a new page is automatically created for you. Additional pages can be created from the Insert ribbon, by right clicking on an existing page or by following the steps described below:

  1. Click add page in the bottom left corner. 


  2. Give the page a title. 


  3. Right click on the page title to manage or organize the page.
     

Notebook sections and pages can be reordered at any time by clicking and dragging them to the preferred order. For additional ideas and resources refer to Microsoft OneNote Video Training.

Accessing Your Notebooks

Microsoft OneNote notebooks are stored in OneDrive. To access your notebooks you can search for them in OneDrive, click on the OneNote icon from the waffle menu or you can access them from within another notebook. Several notebooks can be open at the same time. To navigate between notebooks follow the steps below:  

  1. Click the three horizontal lines in the top left corner to access your notebook collection. 
      

  2. Select a notebook to view, this will open that notebook in a new tab in the browser window.
